What are Causes of Resistance? : Organization Effectiveness and Change,

Causes of resistance can be categorized in Individual resistance and Organizational resistance :

1. Individual Resistance: Resistance is an economic factor (affect mostly workers and employees). It reflects both resistance. They do resistance because of:

  • There is a fear of being Idle with in the organization. Hence, less important will be given to them.
  • There is a fear of Demotion among employees and worker which cause resistance.
  • Fear among employee of not able to build up stets.

Because of those three different fear the entire worker community may fear technological unemployment.

Habits: "Generally perused Trait". It leads to a general acceptability. If this acceptability is broken then the Resistance starts.

Ex. when the employee is transferred his schedule is changed which includes shifting of goods, new school for children and movement to a new locality. Hence, this change of habits leads to resistance.

Insecurity: Insecurity refers to uncertainty about the impact of change.
  • Insecurity creates anxiety and apprehension.
  • Anxiety is over over worship for a particular work and apprehension is a negative apathy.

Lack of communication: It is divided in to interpersonal and interpersonal which is further of tow part as participative and non participative. If participation in communication leads to acceptance and if participation is reduced leads to resistance.

Extent of change: It is of two types Minor (acceptance) and Major (resistance.) The minor change is the change in daily routine of a person and major change is in the shifting network of the people.

Psychological factor: Some factors are as fear of being criticized, fear of being idle, they feel that the new job will bring monotony and boredom. Hence due to some psychological factor they fear resistance.

Social factor: some reasons are as
  • In the membership of informal group are effected, social needs are hurt.
  • Breaking up of social relationship are also basic reason for the social needs to get hurt.
  • A general dislike among a group of people for an individual member may also be the reason for the social need to be hurt.

2. Organizational Resistance: some causes are as:

Threat to power: Top level management has a threat to power and influences, which as middle level management has a threat that they will be throughout from the participative decision making & will not be in a post to function as self managed team.

Group Inertia:
Group inertia depends upon two factors as
  • How loyal one individual member is to be group.
  • How effectively the group resist the change.
The members are influence by the patterns & the attitudes of the groups because they decide the group inertial.

Organizational Structure: Organizational structure is affected by the bureaucratic structure. The bureaucratic structure resist the organization structure. It lead to resistance because of strict line of categorization.

Threat to specialization: An organization may resist specialization because it may threatened the expertise of the specialized groups.

Resource constraints: Resource are of two types adequate and inadequate. If it is a adequate there is a acceptance to change where as inadequate resources resist change.
